Poems by Tangsheng Luo

(the 3):Things relevant the village;  a passage;  I was the king in the tranquil world; the things in the past were like the smoke; then moon went over the wall; a dead threshold.

The divine things relevant the villages, including the dreams of smoke from kitchen chimneys, memory and ants’ roots.
All at a dusk rose from the land which was screened by the dandelions, and rising with the secrets of land,
The excited birds revealed the secrets, and the failed stomachs of the eagles and cinereous vultures disappeared at midnight.
The life-long breathing of the fish was carried away by the cormorants at dawn.

Muddiness, lichen, gravel, and deep, sinuous ancient path slowly, extensively spread from mother’s abdomen
The morning sunshine through the forest slowly changed its angle;the sunshine poured through the thatch house, then sifted out of the door’s cracks to go eastward
The concealed genie in the dream-like ancient town lanes, why did you let me prickled by your sesame-thin needle in a casual way and hurt me from my look to my muscles and bones?

You, roses in breeze, just bloomed on the green meadow in drizzle, receiving the purling sound of village’s limpid water...
...Go this way, and turn to a narrow lane, I once was infatuated with the tales of a melancholy flower and making-one-frightened ghost at night
I threw myself in mother’s arms, learning to sing
“bright moon cast its light, please go down for some ground tea with sesame and herbs...”
The prelude was drawn out, I registered in the water, happy and dejected,
The music notes were squeezed from a small and thin silver needle in childhood, with hastily and carelessly drafted manuscript conveying one’s lyrical emotion, looking back nostalgically

The water also overflowed my forehead, and the ants from the higher boughs also made a dyke of my heart’s river be breached.
When I was four years old, I almost died of illness. In the nightmare of my running a fever,I cried out: train, train
A death was a journey. The amber in my heart was drifting on the water of Jinxi River, waiting for the snow to cover the scene

In my childhood, I often listened to the croaks of frogs in the fields. The divinity was in my nearby place.I formed an individual of solitude and void. The strong invisible current flowed to the mountains, canyons and cliffs. I asked the welkin, who was the king dominating the still world?

The mountain people said that the hunter had gone far away. At the mountain stream where the source of the Jiangxi River was, and where the Dongyue King once hunted the beasts, I placed the weird beasts on the ancient vines to play on a swing. To look back on the past events like smoke. The ink of the paintings with incredible hues, its background bright and translucent, I dreamed about the pandas, monkey king, tigers in the south of China which stuck out their heads by clasping the boughs at the riverside in spring, Being loved by the world, they would be desirous of nothing.
Coming with the birds’ twittering, and going with the rumble of thunder, accompanied with lightning, I went into the woods in spring, the tea aroma wafting. I felt extremely grateful. The trees, thickets and grass kindly concealed the stories on the sly.

These stories without any inclination of alarm and violence, with spinning, glistening and shadows, gave me tranquil merriness in the serene and late night. With child’s simplicity, the itching for peeping at something tantalized me. Inside the wall the fruit swayed, as if they had been hinted by the celestial being. Even if I was weary, my eyes still glistened with spiritual emission. And I fled from the petals, the tree shadows, the tranquil darkness.
My back facing to a little farther village, the overshadowed taller tree seemed to have been moved into the body. For the thirsty people, some leftovers, darker-than-night melons, fruits, plates and the sharp of the kitchen knife’s blade, along with the fragment of happiness were now faintly on or off
Covert was the origin of “Dongyue Wenqu”(a village’s name). When the ancestors went over the wall, I enjoyed the cozy happiness. Even if my back was slapped hard, over the still things the moonlight cast rolling shadows. The thrilling night scene was a test of death. There was a hazard lurking. Dear,if you had secretly heaved a sign, you should have closed your two-cherry-like lips
However, I saw with my own eyes that the previous fog went over the threshold and would be dying. No one spoke out that its fate would have grown the feathers. In the tea cup in March, the tiny tea buds floated. In the night the green, drifting trees were implicit bidding farewell.
Take off love, the person in the mirror.
In the monsoon and flood season, there were lonely ditches in the hills. The iron hammer was behind the door. Someone waved cruelty. The full moon seemed to have held a memorial ceremony for you. To kiss with death would have been your biggest comfort.

The far away place was near; for the hollow (dent) of the stony meteorite should have become the hopeless meteorite. The sign of the stony meteorite would have foretold the birth of Yangshi(an ancient scholar). The gradually moving-on village, the tree shadows, the frosty trace of the wooden bridge seemed to have sung on the way, passing by the dead threshold, being moved by your thousand-year-old sad songs, the occasionally wafting mist should have authentically wrapped the ancient secrets.

(the 4)Cherishing the memory of something;   a vast expanse  still water with rippling;   grandfather and the inkstones;  the rolling hills of metaphor;   the funeral rite in spring;   a crow’s narration;  the seemingly leisurely earthen wall;     the big wooden seals to stamp on grains stored in wooden cabins upstairs.

I went up like whirling about in dancing, with the windy and rainy sound
No one would set up defenses and on the nostalgic days one would touch and feel the passing-away soul
The bird on the Sweeping-tomb Day flew here
Its distressed longing for something was taken away by the wind
The wind whistled under the water
The pale greenness really grew up to be a lovesick forest

The reveries about the past would have been waving on the grass
A vast expanse would have been imbued with fantasy
Which the birds would have described while they were leisurely looking around
If the yearning in my mind had expanded the sea, the ravine stream would have been in my body
If I had started out from the expanse
The expanse would have been the ancestors’ blood lineage  with which their strenuous hair was inherited
If only a line of wild geese would be flying to the boundless expanse with us on the birds’ back
If only the extensive backbone would have risen high from the vast land and wilderness
The villages and streams would have looked so vast due to the frolicking of the children

As if from the depth of grandfather’s white hair
A wide stretch of flat land had been sketched out like the splendid upland
Each time grandfather carried the inkstones on his back
Went on the narrow path in the rocky hills,
It seemed as if his heavy shadows could have been stacked to be a high cliff
In my home village, if you had gone near the inkstones
You would have sniffed the ink fragrance, and felt the inkstones’ smooth texture like our grandfather’s skin
Under the mountain’s rocks the burial sentimental feelings touched me
Grandfather’s iron hammer, along with the chisels, chipped the inkstones, delving into the art for a family’s living
If you had moved nearer, you would have heard the dropping sounds of sweat from the very old times

Grandfather climbed up the five hundred stone steps, then went down into the one hundred meters’ deep mountain cave
His hunchbacked torso needed to shoulder over fifty kilograms’ raw materials of inkstones
Coldness had blended with hot heat and his every moving step was tough and hard.
He never thought of worry and the exploited bloody labour by the boss outside the mountain
If you had moved nearer, the rough breathing sounds would have jingled the heavy days
But I had only heard the heart throbbing in my childhood
If you had approached a little nearer, you could have marveled at the ink coming out of the inkstone from the desk
As if apparently grandfather had been climbing the mountain with the sounds of footsteps on the paper
If nearer more, it seemed as if I would have seen the statue of grandfather standing on the windy and snowy mountain

I once climbed up the abandoned hill with grandpa
And found that the previously trodden flowers by the beasts were of no trace
The vacant or uninhabited hill looked distressed and regretful
With all kinds of flowers wilted and gone
Crying out loudly could only be inexplicably sorrowful

The empty and solitary expanse of grass was not different
in the past or will be not in the future
While the flowers which had once been trodden by the beasts and cursed by the people
Would have been no longer the flowers
The mist still vacillated on the hills
I thought of the pitiable and regrettable one who died early
When I woke up from my sound sleeping
I felt as if there had been footsteps passing on the uninhabited wilderness

Therefore the flowers being trodden by the beasts were a metaphor for the hills
While for me, I couldn’t turn blind eye to it
At this time the rice haystacks rotted in the fields and the rain water in spring slipped down from the haystacks and grass
It seemed that the cow would tide over (pull through) the cold winter soon
However the cow’s eyes brimmed with tears when it encountered a dystocia and died
The sound of heavy rain gradually mixed with the sound of my father sharping his kitchen knife by grinding it on a whetstone

In the village, something was superseded by another, like the plants’ metabolism
I heard the dirge with a tinge of coolness and light-hearted tune
Drifting to the fields and the surroundings, which was for the funeral of a ninety-year-old elder
My youngest brother’s love came serenely in spring’s flamboyance
Their figures went among the long, verdant grass, prostrating themselves in the lush grass

I went into the fields, The vicinity was serene and void with the tepid and indifferent sky
I didn’t know when and how the cereals in the fading noises of people were gotten in and stored in the granaries (usually wooden, small rooms upstairs in each house).
Under the gray sky the news of hunger came from the riverside
At this time my eye met the melancholy of the crows in the snowy fields
“life needs the plots of a play, but a beautiful tragedy will be put on the stage.”

The fierce cold wind highly rose its void tail
The wind also lifted her thin black clothes
She moaned sadly, which made me distressed
But she stubbornly stood on the day’s whiteness
To set off her black and ominousness
The life transmigration (samsara)was just as a stretch of sand dunes closely thwarted and overwhelmed the long night in winter
What kind of omen was it? Could her afterlife be exonerated(rehabilitated) from this life’s sin of hers?
It seemed as if a sickle had been hidden in my painful bosom
As if it had been my this-life’s  fault to cause her something inevitable...

The time stopped at the leisurely durable earthen walls in the northwest of Fujian Province, just like the faces of the farmers which were rough, awkward and gray
The Futun River, a tributary of Jinxi River, flowed through the regions of Jiangle County, Jianning County and Taining County
Rippling with the reflected light and shadows day and night
Another big tributary of Min River, named Jianxi River, on whose upriver there were also three tributaries (Chongyang River,Nanpu River and Songxi River),converged with Min River on its north bank, while the Jinxi River joined the Min River on its south bank, forming the geographical cipher code
Not knowing how many men’s  torsos passed through the history imbued with the fire and blood
How many deaths did one experience? how many tears and flying did one forbear and take? Who endured the hardness for me?

Blessed were the one who came from the gentle wind and drizzle
With the moistened flowers blooming on the riversides
Gradually the mottled stories on the earthen walls which were tranquilly coagulated by time
Then reflected their brilliant charm and beauty again at sometime of someday
Putting on a series of splendid comedies in the man’s world
I went along the transverse direction, then also the longitudinal direction to search for the origin of local-style dwelling houses
And found that the abode houses with earthen walls couldn’t collapse
The people had experienced the vicissitudes of life
The accumulated spirit of the people in Fujian Province was like rays of light in night
Silently under the firmament, propping with their shoulders
Showing the strong amazing impetus of spirit

To ask the stars to come down
To print(stamp) their footmarks and images on the grains stored in upstairs’ cabins with the wooden seals
To let all the images of growing plants, birds, insects, fishes, etc.be printed on the dried grains with the wooden seals
I appreciate the wisdom of our ancestors
Feeling the grains come from the farmers’ strenuous labors

The Love to the Misty Island

The waves rolled and pushed in the rough sea
Along with the willowy waists and fashionable hair passing by
The amorous glance and tone took away your amazing look
The waves breaking and foaming, flashed away and your heart and soul were absorbed(bewitched ) bit by bit
Her long white hair came from ancient times, singing all the way
The moonlight would also go astray, which in the recesses of the islands made the beautiful things flying
Just as the flower petals in spring gave out their passions and fragrance
Sometimes the strong wind tore and pulled; sometimes the storm came suddenly
With the billowing passions which only the island people could resist
But I said to you about the love in my heart with strong emotion
The blessing of the Lord be upon me, giving me the tenderness and pity
Now I was waiting for the love’s sword to penetrate my heart
And let the thunder and lightning destroy my body and soul
As the due punishment from the welkin

Being always harmonious with the breaths of the sea
Going over the Yu Hill, and skimmed over Tai Hill Islands, Dajing Island, Xiyang Island, and Sandu-ou Bay
Those clever, moving words skipping between my exhale and inhale
The fresh wind stirred up the ripples
It showed a rich, profound expression, like the philosophical wisdom
Or like the sea’s blue eyes
I believed that a look could always be amorously flirtatious
A gesture went into the history
Now “the sky was high with the thin clouds, someone longed for seeing the wild geese flying southward”
We wouldn’t sing sonorously with high pitch
“The sky was blue, blue, and the steppe wide, wide; the cattle and the sheep were seen as the grass was prostrated by the blowing wind.”
The scene of herds of cattle and sheep grazing on the grass
Could embellish and show solemn, stirring and magnificence
Their cries and bleat were always harmonious with the breaths of the sea
Which deepened my love into marrow

The Taimu Mountain’s clouds and rocks

Standing on the Taimu Mountain’s rocks, I looked at the clouds roll and unroll (spread)
To split themselves with the remote snow mountains
Under the warm sun I hugged every red stone
There was the soul of fire, the warm heart and the bones which were crisply made sounds

No one knew what happened to me in the past
Nor my thoughts or trifles
Nor my mirth on the wintry day with snow or my distresses
When the beauty comes, the fish would sink in deep water and the wild geese would alight at the beach
Along with the rolling waves

The river stones, mountain stones and the stones on the island
Where a stone harp accompanying me, I embraced a stone of soul
Went to the farther thither with storm
On the way I threw a pebble to try out if the water should be deep or shallow
So that I could pass through

Listening to the Taimu Mountain
       ---------talking with SunShaozhen

The eye was vivid
Like the acute sunshine in summer
One was igniting oneself
And set fire on the dogged stones in someone’s yard
It seemed to me as if a hair could have rolled with the billows and wind
I followed the windy waves
And passed by at noon
Met with someone in surprise, being touched
Listening with the time’s ears
Then talked about, and went together
To spark off the flames of century
I had imagined Xixifu getting some stones down the slope
So we would have rolled up the stones to the top of the Taimu Mountain

The laurels of glory

Getting to Xia-dang Village, (in Shouning County, Fujian Province)
Amidst surrounding elevations and winding roads,
And it seemed as if there had been hundred thousand lofty ridges and towering mountains
Where the nineteen wooden-arch, plank-walled bridges scattered
I went down the ravines, then climbed up the highest peak named Goat-(horn)-Tip
I regarded the excursion to the mountains as visiting a few distant relatives of mine
And didn’t slack off
The mountains were high with the narrow track worming its way up the defile to level ground
Along the Xietang river which passed through the Xietang Town,
The beautiful scenes were often on the perilous peaks, narrow passes and difficult rapids with basins
From northwest to southeast
The wooden, arch bridges with pan-tiled roofs and plank-walls across the streams
One by one, came from Ming and Qing Dynasties
Since they were built over five hundred years before, the wooden, arch bridges had been worn out by the weather
However, those bridges gradually became the “laurels of glory” in people’s hearts
During those days I talked about Shouning County with my friend Shi Pin
I said I was jealous with the merry, free fishes in the streams across which the arch, wooden bridges had been built
The fishes lived in the limpid stream water
And they could easily see the moon and stars slowly moving in the sky
The twittering of birds, the fragrance given out by the flowers, which I knew all hid above the brambles and thorny scrub
While the traces and the dreams left by the people who once visited the arch, wooden bridges, were in the villagers’ hearts
It dawned on me at last: “the laurels of glory” in the world should have been woven with the thorny, thin and long twigs.

After wading through the waves on the shoals in Xiapu County, I uttered the words: To diminish the noises and let the traces fade away

The last rays of the setting sun were on the sea
With the shoals and the tidal flat being exposed after the sea ebbed away
The photographer took photos of the glowing sunset rays and the tidal flat with all living things on it
The green grass near the beach was bright one moment and shadowy the next with reflections from the waves
The footprints and flavors left by the egrets and seagulls
Made the evening clouds more mysterious
Suddenly someone called out on the beach
And the moon cast its chilly, unbending, yet coquettish light there
All of which were just like a gathered unveiling on the sea, then ebbing away
In Xiapu County, I was toasted by poet Yangzhong Tang
And we went with the wind after we waded through the shoal
He had been awarded the Luxun Literature Prize
In the end I realized that I would return to the jungle
I said the words to myself: To diminish the noises and let my traces fade away

The Panyang Stone Sails

Approaching you by sailing on the waving sea pressingly
I found that because of the lost things in the past
The sea level rose with the hills collapsing and the land cracking up
You cleared up the historical dust and debris
Living in the center of storms
You still made yourself composed
I knew that I couldn’t approach you even if I disguised myself in a tree’s shape
I couldn’t be tacitly agreeable with the sea either as you could
Being in the sea
You looked at the billows with an unchangeable posture
Being silent for thousands of years
Even if you bore all the sadness
You should have still gone over numerous highlands of the human world
I knew that I could only revere your lofty, holy body with my humble posture
You perched here
With the marvellous legend on whose tablet there was not any inscription
All the year round you were accompanied by the seagulls
And overcame the billows and thunders
The secret circumstances of honest and clean quality was the never revealed authenticity
I knew even if I had flown to you through the time and space
I might have only been the short while of you
But never been an eternity of you
In the realm of your spirit there was the sleet
There were the congruities of fire and water
However, your hard inner mind
Had deeply blended with the sea’s pulse
So you were happy and rich
Facing to the sea’s tumult
You were always so quiet, indifferent and tall
I couldn’t presumptuously make friends with you as you were so high up
I could only turned over the page of the unforgettable peak
Or passed through the fifty years during which great changes had taken place in the world
( just like that from the seas into mulberry fields, and then, vice versa. )
Therefore I reached your foot as a pilgrim of you
Perhaps you were a stony meteorite or a star
Flying to the human world with the blessed music
I felt the process of your flying
Now I should thank you for your profound serenity
From which I saw your solitude was so poignant
The day I was near the island
My dream was also near the soundless lexis
In the seasons’ Buddhism samsara
I gradually practised asceticism perfectly
If I was a glowing cloud
Drifting towards you from where the numerous houses gave out their splendid lights or where the houses’ lights were dim
I would set off you majesty by approaching you
Or I would ignite the remote flame in the ethereal clouds
To let you be a bewitching scene
By rising or going down with the moon and stars
The stars’ positions changed; the tide being in and off
However, as I saw you, you were supposed to have just been a young monarch
Your status verified a birth of miracle
If you had unfurled the sails for a voyage
You would have not been stirred by honor or disgrace, being adamant and tough
Panyang Stone Sails
Beyond the sea of clouds, you were an authentic existence
It was too remote of you to reach

Music, Pingtan Island and its blue tears

The blue tears which reflected the blueness of the sky, trickling down the face of the sea
The blue moon, also the sea’s moon
Always chanted the poet’s charm in the style of music
As if there would have always been someone fishing out the moon from the sea with a net
As if there would have always been someone with his or her waist curved, catching a turtle in a jar--------going after an easy prey
When the heavy setting sun
Had dug out the brilliant fruit
The blue sea would have surged
With thankfulness and sentiment

I wouldn’t like to be
The light and shades in the world at a time
Nor shedding life’s bitter tears
If only I would have prostrated myself on the Pingtan Island
Becoming the unceasing waves
With the fresh air flowing into the people’s thoraxes
Between their breaths
Or if the travelers should have been in an dilemma or plight
I would have been the people’s mirror of introspection
Then they would brand-newly pose for
Chanting a blue prelude again

Listening to the wind in the North Seaport

The warm wintry wind walked and read something on the way of human life
Kissed the sunlight gently, gave the sea a hug
And peeling the sophistication and ripples off the sea layer upon layer thinly
Which made my tears trickle down my face
I climbed up the West Stored Building, listening to the wind flipping through the book of man’s life
And showing up the pages’ numbers in winter leaf by leaf
The wind was gentle and pretty, always whispered in the depth of time
And said to me, “taking good care of yourself”
Which hinted at sweetly worrying of something
With such a scene, I wouldn’t like to hear that it might be the Cape of good hope
When the waves met the current, the sea was stirred
And it billowed right away
Picked up the time’s debris with a mass of bruises
Dodged the historical punishment at the stillness of time
I wished that she would come from the far away Oriental
At this time in the North Seaport it was fate for me
To listen to a woman named Poem who gave me instructions
I listened to her whispers
Then she went away soundlessly

Inquiring about the Thirty-six-footed Lake

You wouldn’t have to say again and again that it was a wonder
And let yourself go and ask
The thirty-six-footed Lake, where do you come from
It was the remote glint and flash of daggers and swords
That hacked at it
Chopping it to become many foot-like stones and earth with many lovesick trees growing on them
It was the rain from the welkin that whetted its appetites to be a limpid lake
So there was a Legend about the lake
Even if the thunders and lightening
It rained with hot tears
The lake would hold back its agony
Only showed its tender, happy feelings

You wouldn’t have to say again and again, that it was a wonder
And let yourselves go and asked that
The thirty-six-footed lake, where do you come from
If only you climbed up the lovesick trees for listening to the warble of birds
Or quietly lay on the stones to prick up your ears for the sounds of nature
Then you would know if it was the divine water from the welkin?
And you would know if it was the stalactites and sweet spring water in the man’s world
The Dragon Island, the thirty-six-footed Lake
It experienced the changing weather, cold, hot, frosty, snowy, etc., so it had been closely linked with the dwellers on the island, and had the same fate

You wouldn’t have to say again and again, that it was a wonder,
And let yourself go and ask
The thirty-six-footed Lake, where do you come from?
If only you had listened to the legend of divine dragon and the dog from heaven
Or you had bathed in the holy water of the lake
The fairy had changed into the amorous thirty-six-footed Lake
When you had experienced the serenity despite desperate plight
The sweetness despite the bitterness and sufferings
You would have had the most enviable love

I Am the Blowing-sand-happy-bay

On the vast sea
I am the Blowing-sand-happy-bay

I was born in Pingtan Island
But I wouldn’t do as my forefathers did for a living
Who unfurled the sails day and night to meet the distant reefs in the water and the windy waves
Or in other words
On the islands, in the fishing villages
They would bear the barrenness of the land generation after generation
And they had to complain of their bitterness before the expanse of sea

On the vast sea
I am the Blowing-sand-happy-bay

When the morning fog in early spring
Veiled my eyes
I wouldn’t fear of the far away black clouds with storms hidden
If I was stranded on the remote beach
When the hot heat in summer besieged my fatigued body
I would have gone into the sea’s inner mind
Quietly blowing up the sand to fill in the land

When the autumnal wind instigated tide to ramble up
Waving up then ebbing away
I was in the cozy dream
Narrated the stunning, vivid stories in the moonlight
When the wintry coldness was rampant
On the relics left by the ancestors when they explored the place
I would merrily swim in the sea
Letting all happiness set off from the inner heart

On the vast sea
I am the Blowing-sand-happy bay

The sand’s sentiment aroused because of the wind
The sea was lithe and vivid because of the waves
The sand and sea gave me a tough cast of mind
The wind and waves embellished me with the enticing charm
My character was sculptured by the wind and waves of the sea
The bronzed hue of my face set off the gold and the vastness
On the beach, in the sea
For the sake of deep love
I silently bore the sea water’s corrosion and the windy sand’s ruthless destroy
It was I that made the wind and sand restrain their impulsiveness and palpitations from the primitive wilderness
It was I that gently looked at the sun rising in the east at five o’clock
when I layered the land by blowing the sand in the very early morning

I would wave gently without flaunting myself
On the expanse of the sea
Which was now greenish, now azure at the happy time
I was the Blowing-sand-happy-bay
